Kansas State University

Kansas State University was founded in 1863 and is located in the northeastern town of Manhattan, Kansas. In addition to K-State’s main campus, a satellite campus is located 60 miles west in Salina, Kansas. As a nationally recognized comprehensive university, K-State has more than 200 undergraduate programs, sixty-two master’s degree programs, and forty doctoral programs to offer its students. All programs are obtainable through one of the following nine colleges:

  • College of Arts and Sciences
  • College of Business Administration
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Agriculture
  • College of Education
  • College of Human Ecology
  • College of Veterinary Medicine
  • College of Technology and Aviation
  • College of Architecture, Planning, and Design

Currently there are over 22,000 students enrolled at K-State with approximately 6,200 living in either the nine residence halls on campus or in greek housing.

K-State takes pride in the fact that it ranks first in the nation among 500 other state universities in its running total of scholarship recipients. As of fall 2000, six Rhodes, ten Marshall, twenty-three Truman, twenty-four Fulbright, thirty-six Goldwater, and thirteen Phi Kappa Phi scholarships have been awarded to K-State scholars since 1986. Also, K-State is the only public university to rank in the top ten among all U.S. universities in the area of scholarship recipients over the past 15 years. Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Stanford are four colleges that appear on the list with K-State. Academics are taken very seriously at K-State, as well as participation in university student organizations, which there are more than 375 available. For three of the last five years, K-State’s student government has been named the nation’s best among large colleges. Also, the livestock judging team has been the national champion for the past six years. K-State’s yearbook has won a number of national awards over the past few years and the speech team has consistently placed in the top eight in the nation during this time as well. These are just a few of the student organizations that have gained national recognition. And then there are K-State’s NCAA Division I varsity sports. Football, Volleyball, Cross Country, and Track and Field are some of the most successful teams of the 1999-2000 school year ranking in the top twenty-five in the nation.

Aside from the campus, the Manhattan area is very well known for its natural beauty and has much to offer in activities and entertainment. Local attractions consist of the Sunset Zoo, the new Colbert Hills PGA golf course, and Aggieville which is one of the oldest campus shopping areas in the country. Also, Tuttle Creek Reservoir is just minutes away and provides a great opportunity for water-skiing, fishing, swimming, boating and camping. The community is very active in the arts and feature performances in K-State’s McCain Auditorium and Nichols Theatre on a regular basis. There are also a number of art museums located both on and off campus.
